Deer Pond Cabin Eagle’s Rest Cabin

“ For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
So great is his love for those who fear him.”

Information

Mountain Springs Cabins are located just off Highway 103 North five miles north of Ponca and the Buffalo River. The Mountain Springs area is known for its many springs, beautiful bluffs and rock formations, and mountain vistas. It has one of the highest elevations in Newton County at approximately 2200 feet. The natural beauty of these mountains is unspoiled and offers a quiet haven from the hustle of the modern world. The area is teeming with wildlife, and you will most likely see deer and wild turkeys feeding in the meadow, chipmunks, rabbits, and squirrels playing around the cabins, wild birds of all kinds gathering at our feeders and nesting boxes, eagles soaring overhead, and maybe a bear loping across the trails. Our hummingbirds will entertain you with their voracious feeding frenzies.

The cabins are surrounded by 65 acres with easy well kept hiking trails—both meadows and woods trails. From early spring to late fall you will marvel at the many wildflowers scattered along the trails. A highlight of your stay at Mountain Springs might be a hike through the woods to Wildflower Falls, a picnic at the falls or Deer Pond, or just relaxing on the porch while experiencing one of our spectacular sunsets which was described by one of our guests as “better than the sunsets at Key West.”

Our Cabins

EAGLE’S REST CABIN got its name when we saw an eagle perched on the future site of the cabin. It is made of local cedar logs handcrafted by Amish craftsmen and is decorated in an eclectic style of old treasures, local art, heirloom quilts, and wildlife collections and is a perfect place to enjoy the peace and solitude of nature. Many couples have celebrated special occasions such as honeymoons, anniversaries, and birthdays in Eagle’s Rest. The loft with beds and sitting area allow families and larger groups plenty of extra space.

DEER POND CABIN is our newest cabin and is around the hill and out of site of Eagle’s Rest. It is also made of cedar logs and handcrafted by the same Amish craftsmen and is filled with quilts, antiques, and handmade furniture—some made by Jack. He also designed and built some interesting architectural features in the cabin. As the name implies, it overlooks a small spring-fed pond that we named Deer Pond because of the deer that come to drink in the summertime. This cabin also has a loft with plenty of room for reading, games, or just getting away from the crowd. We expect it to also be a place of rest and relaxation for all those who come to stay.

Both cabins have the following;

  • Sleep 6-8 people

  • Fully equipped kitchen

  • Microwave oven

  • Whirlpool bath

  • Fireplace

  • Air conditioning

  • TV/VCR and movies

  • Queen beds

  • Wrap-around porches

  • Gas grill

  • Linens

  • Picnic tables

  • Complimentary coffee

  • Fabulous mountain views

And lots of unique extras for the perfect Ozark Mountain vacation for a couple wanting to get away, or a family looking for fun and adventure.

Attractions

We are minutes from the Upper Buffalo/Ponca Wilderness area. This area has some of the most scenic hiking trails in the Ozarks. A brief drive will take you to the trailheads of Goat Bluff, Cecil Cove, Broadwater Falls, Hawksbill Crag (the most photographed spot on the Buffalo), Lost Valley and Eden Falls Trail, Hemmed-In-Hollow (the tallest waterfall in Mid America), and Steel Creek Campground with its awesome Roark Bluff, and great swimming holes.

The new Elk Education Center in Ponca, located in a beautiful log build overlooking a clear Ozark stream is a hands-on museum for kids and adults with an emphasis on elk ecology, nature study, and wildlife.

Down the road from Ponca is Historic Boxley Valley. There you will see working farms, lovely white farmhouses, and interesting old barns, as well as elk herds grazing in a pastoral setting along the river. The several hiking trailheads are in the area.

About Us

Jack and Camille learned to love the Ozarks as children on family vacations to the area. Later they were to spend their honeymoon in the beautiful mountains of Newton County. Over the years they have come back over and over again to hike the trails, canoe the river, drive the back roads, and relax in the peace and serenity of the hills and valleys.
In 2001 they decided it was the right time to pursue their dream of actually living in the mountains. On September 11, they packed up the last of their belongings, including two Jack Russell mama dogs, their five pups, and a cat and left their home of twenty years in Hamburg, Arkansas for their own mountain adventure. Even the tragic events of that day couldn’t dampen the excitement as they settled in a tiny cabin at Mountain Springs on the site of their soon-to-be log home.
They were fortunate to engage the help of Amish craftsmen who built their dream home of native cedar logs milled at a local Amish mill. The same builders also built Eagle’s Rest Cabin opened in July 2002, and Deer Pond Cabin opened in February 2004.
Jack now teaches school at Harrison High School while Camille, a retired teacher/librarian, manages the cabin business. Their love affair with the land has grown to include the people who live here. And they receive much joy from being a part of Boxley Baptist Church in Historic Boxley Valley. They feel so blessed to live and work in such a beautiful part of God’s world.
They have also come to realize an unexpected pleasure from managing a vacation cabin business --getting to know the many people who come to the cabin as their guests and leave as friends. They invite you to experience a few days on this peaceful mountain, and you will probably say, as one of our small guests (Sophie, age 10) said, “You will want to stay forever!”
