The historic Boxley valley near the headwaters of
the Buffalo National River provides a pastoral setting for Walnut Grove Cabin
and plenty of hiking, fishing, swimming, canoeing and watchable wildlife.
This spacious new cabin was originally constructed for our
private weekend retreat and provides space for a large family or a small group.
There are two private bedrooms, each with a queen size bed as well as a single
bed, a living room and a sitting room couch that fold out, two large bathrooms
and lots of floor space. Phone for local calls (Phone
card needed for long distance calls) .
Its just off Highway 21 enough to provide a private,
peaceful setting and backs up against our wooded hillsides while facing out
across a wide pasture towards the old Boxley community building and Boxley
Baptist Church.
That pasture provides space for your horses if you wish to
bring them along and the trails and backroads surrounding the cabin are perfect
for scenic trail rides. Just up the road is the old Beaver Jim Villines log
cabin and one of the best places in the county to watch the elk.
From our cabin porch you can see the line where the
Buffalo National River winds its way through the valley. It’s the nation’s
premier national river and is famous for its bass fishing and for exciting
canoeing, especially here on the upper river. The massive limestone bluffs that
tower above its crystal waters provide majestic scenery and some terrific
hiking. We’re within stone’s throw of some of the best of the rivers hiking
trails, Lost Valley, Hemmed In Hollow and Goat Bluff. We have information on all
of them available at our cabin, and you can also get information from the
National Park Service and their Pruitt Ranger Station. Call 870-741-5443 for
information. Canoe rentals and shuttle service are available locally.
That porch we mentioned has a double rocking chair and
plenty of benches where you can spend a few hours relaxing with a good book,
some music, visiting, or just enjoying the quiet. Beside it is our barbecue area
with a picnic table for cookout evenings.
Step inside the door and make yourself at home. There’s a
living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom, and bath with Jacuzzi downstairs and
a loft bedroom, bath, and sitting room upstairs. The kitchen is fully equipped
with cooking and eating utensils. Just bring your food. We have hardwood floors,
a big native rock fireplace, comfortable furnishings and a large dining table
that will seat six comfortably. Some of our favorite antiques, hand-stitched
quilts, and wildlife mounts add to the rustic charm of this spacious cabin. A
skylight brings the sun into the comfortably furnished living room, making the
cabin cheery even on winter days. You’re in the heart of the Elk Capitol of
Arkansas at Walnut Grove Cabin and we’ve found shed antlers almost at our
door, so don’t be surprised if you carry your morning coffee out to the porch
and find yourself surrounded by some of the estimated 500 animals in the Hilary
Jones Elk Herd. Most mornings and evenings, and throughout the day in the winter
months, they can be seen somewhere in the fields of this valley.
There are also songbirds, whitetail deer, squirrels, wild
turkeys and other game and non-game species also love our fields and river and
you can hike the quiet roads and count several species. Or, grab your wildflower
guide and set out to identify the many flowers that bloom from earliest spring
through frost.
Branson, Missouri, the country music capitol, and the
Silver Dollar City theme park are good day trips from this area. In this area, there are quality craft and antique
shops, located along some superb scenic drives where you can enjoy panoramic
views, glorious fall color and clouds of snowy spring dogwood.
